Illness makes people feel bad

Illness is a Bad Thing.  It makes people feel bad.

People feel bad because

  • They behave badly when someone they care about is ill, even when they don’t want to.
  • They have the ‘wrong’ feelings when someone they care about is ill.
  • They don’t ring as often as they should.
  • They are afraid of saying the wrong thing
  • They are afraid of embarrassing themselves or making things worse
  • They are afraid of demands being put on them.
  • They are afraid of putting demands on other people.
  • They are afraid that if they make demands, people will abandon them.
  • They are afraid people will say no.
  • They are afraid they will have to do more than they have time for.
  • They feel selfish when they don’t want to help.
  • They fall out of love.
  • They stop being a good partner, lover, child, parent.
  • They say the wrong thing.
  • They don’t say the right thing.

About thetroublewithillness

I've been a counsellor for people with physical illnesses for a long time now, and learnt a lot about what it's like living with your own or someone else's illness. I want to pass some of this on.
